For a Life Without Limits
Friend of TnG Apparel’s, Neil McLagen, is embarking on an extraordinary mission next month under the title Crossing for a Cause – to ride a bicycle from Perth to Sydney (3,900km) unsupported and solo. Why? Neil lives with type 1 diabetes and is now using his passion and commitment to fitness to raise awareness – and funds – to help combat this illness in the future. We wish Neil all the very best on his incredible journey and will be following his progress as he travels across the country.
Here is some of Neil’s story.
My name is Neil. I'm 37 years old. I live in Perth Western Australia with my family. I'm a customs broker by profession and an amateur ultra-endurance cyclist. I also love cooking, gardening and good coffee. I'm competitive in life and won’t step away from a good challenge. I'm also living with an auto immune disease and as a result, type 1 diabetes, coeliac disease and Hashimoto's hypothyroidism.
I advocate for management of my type 1 diabetes (and overall better health) using a low carbohydrate, whole-foods lifestyle. This has been a breakthrough for me and after conducting my own research into its efficacy, believe that it's the optimal choice for my health. Combined with regular exercise, these are important cornerstones in my type 1 diabetes management.
I believe in living a life without limits, not letting type 1 diabetes or the challenges of life itself prevent me from doing what I love to do. Part of the challenge with living with a disease such as type 1 diabetes is overcoming the mental aspect, as depression and anxiety are closely related and are two things I also regularly battle with. But for me, fitness, health and nutrition have been an incredible way to help me overcome these hurdles. Keeping fit isn’t just an act, but an enjoyable, sustainable lifestyle. With fitness paired with the dietary approach that best helps to nourish my body, I’m able to stay healthy, happy and active.
All money raised through the Telethon Type 1 Family Centre and the official Everyday Hero fundraising page will aid in further research and improving management techniques for type 1 diabetes.
